Ladies, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that women shouldn’t lift weights, because it will make you bulky and unattractive. Well, guess what, that’s a load of BS!!! There are actually so many benefits to weight training, for people of all shapes and sizes. Bodybuilding.com even wrote about it, check it out.
Walk into any gym today and what’s the first thing that you see? Cardio machines EVERYWHERE. Today’s fitness industry markets cardio as the best way to lose weight quickly and effectively. However, that is actually far from the truth. Cardio may make you sweat and feel like you’ve gotten in a hell of a workout, but you probably didn’t burn nearly as many calories as you think you did. Surprisingly, lifting weights has been shown to burn the same amount if not more calories as cardio.
Adding in weight training to your exercise routine will produce more results than you thought possible. Doing something as simple and a squat complex, or a shoulder complex, can help tone your body, while burning calories. If you feel like lifting weights is not enough, just add your cardio to the end of your workout as a finisher! This way you can really empty the tank, because it’s last part of your workout. By adding in weight training, you will increase your lean muscle mass (not the kind that makes you bulky), which will gradually increase your metabolism, which will in turn increase your energy expenditure. Long story short, lifting weights means your body starts using more energy quicker. Lifting weights is an overlooked method of exercise, and really shouldn’t be thrown under the bus!
I know I haven’t addressed it until now, but ladies, lifting weights will not make you bulky. Yes, I see those Crossfit Athletes who are crazy jacked and scary looking too. I hate to break it to you, but most of them are most likely on performance enhancing drugs. At any rate, they are very high caliber athletes, and unless you intend on winning the Crossfit Games, I promise you lifting weights won’t make you bulky. Next time you’re at the gym walk over to the dumbbells and do some squats, you might be sore the next day, but your body will thank you in the long run!!!!
Never forget that strong is beautiful ;)
